How to choose the right canvas size for your wall

The most common mistake is going too small. Here is the rule of thumb we use in the shop, and how to test it before you order.

Almost everyone who comes to the counter with a canvas in mind starts too small. A print that looks generous on a phone screen looks apologetic above a sofa, and once it is on the wall there is no fixing it short of ordering again.

The rule we use is simple. A piece hanging above furniture should be roughly two thirds the width of whatever it sits above. A three seater sofa is about two metres, so you are looking at a canvas around 130cm across, either as one piece or as a split set.

For a chimney breast, measure the breast rather than the room, and fill about half to two thirds of the width. For a stairwell, go bigger than feels sensible, because you view it from a distance and from below.

Before you commit, cut the size out of newspaper and tape it to the wall for a day. It takes five minutes and it settles the argument. People almost always come back and order one size up.

The other thing worth checking is the image itself. A canvas wraps around the edge of the frame, so roughly two centimetres of your photograph disappears around the sides. If somebody is standing near the edge of the shot, they will lose an ear. Send us the file and we will show you the crop before we print.
